How this is calculated
Developed length
Each bend adds a neutral-axis arc length BA = θ × (R + Kt). Flatwise bends use the stock thickness; edgewise bends use the bar width. Twist sections add no developed length but consume a twist length along the run.
Flat pattern and holes
Hole and cut-out coordinates are measured from the datum corner of the flat pattern. Hole patterns expand linearly or as a grid. The preview, DXF, SVG, STEP and PDF all use the same flat-pattern model, so changing a segment or bend updates every output together.
DFM rules
The Qumek DFM rules (version 1.0, reviewed October 2026) check minimum bend radius by material and temper, edgewise radius, twist length, minimum flange, hole diameter, hole-to-edge distance, hole-to-bend clearance, laminated bends and partial plating overlap. Rules are advisory and shown with their source; they are not a substitute for a sample bend trial.
File formats
DXF is 1:1 in millimetres with OUTLINE, HOLES, BEND_LINES, ANNOTATION, PLATING_ZONES and INSULATION_BARE layers. The PDF is an A3 landscape flat pattern with a title block. The specification file opens in the generator so a colleague can pick up the same part.
Limits
The model assumes an idealised neutral axis and uniform section, and the current STEP writer emits a faceted mesh rather than an exact B-rep. Check the K-factor, bend deduction and corner relief against your tooling before releasing a drawing.
Which K-factor does the generator use?+
The default K-factor comes from the Qumek DFM rules for the material group. Copper and aluminium use different defaults, and a bend can override the value. A press-brake trial is the only reliable way to confirm K for a specific tool and material lot.
Is the STEP file an exact solid?+
No. This build writes a visual interchange mesh from the swept section. It is useful for review and rough layout, but it is not an exact B-rep solid. Use your CAD kernel for production modelling.
What layers are in the DXF?+
The DXF uses OUTLINE for the part boundary and cut-outs, HOLES for holes and slots, BEND_LINES for bend centre lines, ANNOTATION for notes, PLATING_ZONES for selective plating and INSULATION_BARE for insulation-free zones.
Can I use the DFM checks as an inspection plan?+
No. The checks are a first-pass manufacturability screen based on the Qumek DFM rules. They do not replace a process FMEA, first article inspection, bend trial or a qualified supplier review.
Does the tool upload my drawing?+
No. The specification and geometry stay in your browser. Inputs are compressed into the URL for sharing. Nothing is sent to Qumek unless you press the send button.
Need the drawing checked?
Send it. We come back with DFM notes, a line-by-line costing and a development timeline.
