Key takeaways
- Delhi NCR is strong in sheet metal enclosures, switchgear, panel assemblies and electrical plastics.
- Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad have different industry mixes and different logistics.
- Winter air quality rules can restrict construction, transport and some processes for weeks at a time.
- Plating and powder coating are usually subcontracted, so the finish route needs its own audit.
The shape of the cluster
Delhi NCR spreads across the national capital and into Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The industrial belt includes Noida and Greater Noida to the east, Ghaziabad to the north east, and Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad and Bawal to the south and west. Each state has its own labour, power and environmental rules.
The cluster's identity is electrical and light engineering. Sheet metal enclosures, switchgear, panel boards, cable harnesses, connectors, moulded housings and small assemblies are all well represented. Vehicle production and auto components add another layer, especially around Gurugram and Manesar.
The belt also carries a large trading and distribution layer. Many firms sell and assemble rather than make, and some own no plant at all. That is not automatically a problem, but it changes the audit. Ask whether the supplier is a manufacturer, a trader or an assembler, and inspect the site where the value is actually added.
Sheet metal and enclosures
Enclosure work covers laser cutting, turret punching, bending, welding, riveting and powder coating. Many firms build electrical panels, control cabinets, server racks and instrumentation boxes. The work is often made to a customer drawing with a specific cutout pattern and a specific finish.
The failure modes are predictable: burrs on a cutout, a bend line that drifts, a weld that pulls the frame out of square, and a powder coat that bridges a mating face. Ask for the first article to include the enclosure squared, the door gap, the gland plate fit and the earth continuity bond. Those checks matter more than the overall size.
Material choice is usually mild steel, galvanised steel or stainless. Each has a different weld and finish route. Galvanised sheet needs care at the weld and the cut edge, and stainless needs a matching passivation if the weld is exposed. State the sheet grade and the finish on the drawing, not in a separate email.

Switchgear and electrical assemblies
The region has a long electrical equipment base, from component makers to panel builders and assemblers. A typical programme combines a sheet metal enclosure, a copper busbar or cable harness, a moulded support, a switching device and a test routine.
The assembly is where the electrical and mechanical worlds meet. Clearance and creepage distances, torque on current carrying joints, earth continuity and dielectric withstand all need a recorded check. A supplier that only inspects the metal parts is not inspecting the assembly that the customer receives.
Busbar and cable work inside a panel also decide the temperature rise. A joint that is not flat, a cable lug that is not crimped to the right height or a bar that is undersized will show up as heat at full load. Ask for the torque record, the crimp height check and the temperature rise evidence for the assembly, not only the component.
Moulded housings and insulation parts
Plastic moulding serves electrical housings, covers, terminal blocks, supports and enclosures. Materials range from general purpose grades to flame retardant compounds. The choice is driven by the working temperature, the flammability requirement and the mechanical load.
Ask for the material grade and the UL or IEC flammability evidence, not just a colour. Wall thickness, gate position and draft decide whether the part fills and releases. For a housing that holds a live part, the wall thickness and the insert position are safety features, not cosmetic details.
Insert moulding and ultrasonic welding add another layer. A metal insert that is not held at the right depth will pull out or crack the boss. A welded joint that is not controlled will vary in strength. Ask for the insert pull out test and the weld parameter record for the parts that use them.
A finish callout needs a thickness and a standard
Powder coat, zinc plating and paint all need a measured thickness and an adhesion check. A colour name is not a specification.
Tooling, fixtures and the finish chain
Most enclosure firms own their press tooling and their bending fixtures, but the tool room may be a separate shop. That is fine if the tool is maintained and the tryout is documented. Ask who built the tool, who owns it and how a worn punch or die insert is replaced without a change to the part.
The finish chain is the longer risk. Powder coating, zinc plating, anodising and painting are often subcontracted, and each adds a handover. A coating that is too thick can bridge a mating face; a plating bath that is out of control can flake or discolour. Ask for the finish house name, the thickness check and the adhesion test.
The winter constraint
Air quality in the region deteriorates in winter, and the authorities impose graded restrictions that can affect construction, diesel transport, generators and some industrial processes. The rules change by period and by area, so a supplier's ability to run through December and January is a real planning question.
Ask how the plant managed the last winter. Did it lose shifts, switch to gas, or use a backup plan for painting and plating? Build a buffer into the launch schedule and keep the finished goods route flexible. A delay in a plating unit can hold an entire enclosure batch.
Logistics and export routing
Delhi NCR is inland. Containers usually move by rail or road to an inland container depot, then to a port such as Mundra, JNPT or Pipavav. Tughlakabad and Dadri are common depots. The rail leg can be efficient, but it adds handovers and a booking lead time.
Air cargo moves through Indira Gandhi International Airport, which has broad international coverage. For urgent samples and high value assemblies, air is often the practical choice. For sea freight, compare the total door to port time and the depot cut off, not only the road distance.
Packaging deserves its own line. Enclosures scratch and distort, and a panel with a powder coated door can arrive with a mark that fails the customer's incoming check. Agree the interleaving, the corner protection and the pallet pattern, and ask for a packing sample before the first shipment.
What to verify before you commit
Check the entity, the plant address and the state pollution consent. Confirm which processes are in-house and which are subcontracted. For electrical assemblies, ask for the test procedure and the records. For sheet metal, ask for the gauge list and the powder coat thickness check.
Then ask about capacity and seasonality. A plant that is full before the winter restrictions may not be able to recover a lost week. Agree the release schedule, the buffer stock and the escalation contact before the first purchase order.

Frequently asked questions
What does Delhi NCR manufacture?
The belt is strong in sheet metal enclosures, switchgear, panel assemblies, cable harnesses, electrical plastics and auto components. Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Manesar and Faridabad are the main areas.
How does winter air quality affect suppliers?
Graded restrictions can limit construction, diesel transport, generators and some processes. The rules vary by period and area. Ask how the plant coped last winter and build a buffer into the launch plan.
Which port serves Delhi NCR exports?
Containers usually move by rail or road to an inland depot such as Tughlakabad or Dadri, then to Mundra, JNPT or Pipavav. Air cargo uses Indira Gandhi International Airport.
What should a sheet metal enclosure first article include?
Overall dimensions, squareness, door and panel gaps, cutout positions, burr condition, powder coat thickness, adhesion and earth continuity. These checks reflect how the enclosure will assemble and earth.
